In Gail Albert Halaban’s Out My Window, flashing glimpses into seemingly unsuspecting homes deliver the unfiltered, coexistent realities of neighbors across the globe. In New York, Paris, Rome, Buenos Aires, and Venice, staged and meticulously strategized images of apartment buildings and shared homes draw contrasts between the architectural identities of these cities’ exteriors with the interior, private lives of their varied residents. Albert Halaban works in communion with her subjects, explaining the series’ concept to the tenants of a chosen building and producing the resulting image with a collaborative approach. With residents casting themselves as consenting subjects for Albert Halaban’s voyeuristic vision, their ensuing communication and collective participation in the production of a single image presses on our conception of coexistence, visually defining the blurred lines between privacy and interpersonal connection. Out My Window thereby contends that by virtue of living in a city or sharing a dwelling, individual existence inevitably contributes to a larger collective identity: be it the general moniker of a New Yorker, or simply a resident of 17-e on Rue Lemercier.
